John Katona

This website will provide information and support for John Katona. John is a 18 year old from Michigan who was involved in a car accident on 4/22/05. He sustained several injuries, and is diagnosed as having a "complete" spinal cord injury at C5 vertebrae. We believe that God will heal John completely, and that He has a plan for John's life. We hope you will join us in supporting John while he progresses through the healing process. God bless you, Sincerely, Joe, Sue, John, Ryan, Trevor Katona

Last week, the teens went over to visit a friend, Thiago Olson, and his basement science experiment. You see, Thiago spent 2 years putting together a machine that can create a fusion reaction. That's right, you read correctly, nuclear fusion (not the stuff atom bombs are made of--that's fision). Here, Amanda, Jimmy Cook, John, Ashley, and Thiago (his friends at school call him "The Mad Scientist") are behind the contraption. Thiago is only the 18th amatuer to accomplish the feat of creating an actual fusion reaction. Thiago fired it up (pun intended) and showed us a demonstration of plasma gas being generated. It would have taken over 3 hours to pull enough vacuum in the chamber to produce fusion, so we did not get to witness that, however. Thiago has become quite a celebrity, having been referred to on Leno and Letterman. He was also interviewed on Fox news (but the interviewer got fusion and fision mixed up and was expressing concern over Thiago's experiment getting into the wrong hands).

John makes an event out of getting a haircut. He decided to get a "mohawk", and Travis, Nicole, and Amanda were happy to oblige. Here are some shots before/during/and after. He should have charged admission...

5-19-06 John, Amanda, Sue and I all went to John's cousin, Rick Katona's wedding today. Rick's dad's name is John Katona, and so is his brother's. The room was overflowing with John Katona's (even more J. Katonas when you add in his Aunt Judy and me). Just thought you'd like to know--or not.

John decided to break the dress code at school last Friday. He used the costume as a fund-raiser for the wheelchair foundation, carrying a sign that read "Get your picture taken with an ape-$2.00 or 5 bananas." In the phot0 above is Abby, and 2 teachers on the below.

5-11-06 John and some friends are going to a concert in Detroit tonight. The group is from Iceland and have a wierd name(go figure). Left to right are Jeannie, Maggie, Paul, Trevor, Derrick. The plan is to watch Seinfeld videos on the way down to the concert.

I do not have any recent photos of John, so here are a couple from the Auto Show in Detroit. He went with his friend, Adam. Here, John is admiring his favorite car of the show (and everyone else's)--the Camaro Show Car.Adam is standing behind John in the lower photo (wearing the blue cap).

Just 2 more weeks of school, and then graduation. John is signed up and ready to go to Oakland University in the fall. He will be studying engineering. I will try to get some recent shots, but if any of you have any, please send them to me. katonajoe@aol.com

3-21-06 OK, so I have not been posting much lately--sorry already!!!
In late February, we had some people to the house from Kettering University (Flint, Mi. Engineering school where John is going in 2007/8). We decided to surprise Amy Garner with a birthday party. It was a real surprise since her actual birthday is 4 months away. From left to right in front is Jimmy Cook(formerly from our church, now moved to New York), Adam from our church, Amy Garner (the "Birthday Girl"), John, Ryan. In the back row, "Dr. Mike" (Friend from Kettering), Paul (John's friend from school), Reggie Bell (Professor from Kettering), Dan Bartz (Kettering Grad, now works for GM, presented to the group on hybrid vehicles and their tie-in to autonomous vehicle control), Dave (current student from Kettering). We ate, played cards, smoked stogies(just kidding), celebrated make-believe birthdays, played poker, drank fake wine, and had a great time!! Sue's disclaimer: Joe had a lack of supervision while I was in Florida visiting my folks at the time.

Here is Natalie. She was the speach therapist from Beaumont who helped John learn to speak and swallow after his tracheostomy was removed. Posted by Picasa

Here is John with Rhonda, one of the nurses from the P/T wing at Beaumont. Posted by Picasa

2-16-06 We went to Beaumont Hospital today to look into special wheelchair wheels. While there, we got a chance to see some freinds from John's stay in rehab at Beaumont back in June, 2005. Here is John with one of the PT's, Marty. John always liked Marty's knowledge and helpfulness. Today, Marty came through again by helping out with the decisions on the new wheels. Posted by Picasa

John at the volleyball game with Jordan Norris. Jordan plays on the girl's varsity volleyball team, and is Ryan's good friend. Posted by Picasa

2-9-06 We went to another one of the girl's volleyball games on Friday night-this was their last home game. We got to see Amy Garner and Jordan Norris play. Look at the suprise on John's face as Amy steels his flowers. Posted by Picasa

This one's for Ashley--you asked for it!!

More from the "Stomp!" concert evening...

We went to Starbucks 7 minutes before they closed at 11:00 pm. After giving the helpers an undeserved hard time, we escaped with our goodies. In this photo, Ashley is surprised when she bites into a cookie and a bright light goes off. Posted by Picasa

Thursday night was the "Stomp!" concert at the Fisher Theater in Detroit. Going along was TeeJay, Ashley, Dave, John and Amy. I drove. My reward was getting to sit in the balcony seats with Ashley and Amy while John, Dave and TeeJay sat in row 7 on the main floor. I got the better deal.

Amy had to wash her face after this photo-she was ambushed with one of John's tongue lashings. All had a great time. Posted by Picasa

John and I finally went to one of Amy Garner's volleyball games last Wednesday. We arrived late and the game went fast, so we only got to see the last 8 or 9 points. The Oakland Christian Lancers had no trouble defeating whoever-it-was that they were playing. Amy almost killed someone from the other team with one of her smashes. Don't let her smile fool you-she's mean on the court! Posted by Picasa

1-8-06 Our long-time friends and neighbors, Ken and Shirley Stoddard, came over to visit last the weekend. They have both been like second parents to our kids--and the kids just love them. Shirley's first act when we met them in 1995 was to pull a nail from Ryan's foot (Shirley being a nurse has really been handy with our 3 boys). John dressed up special for this photo-he is doing his impersonation of "Little Red Riding Hood". Posted by Picasa

12-30-05 John with Amanda Carr, his physical
therapist from Craig. The wedding was beautiful,
and the reception a lot of fun. Best wishes, Amanda! Posted by Picasa

12-30-05 John was fascinated by the "Tree of Gloves" that was on display at the church where Amanda was married. He was caught here in a moment in front of the many mitts. Posted by Picasa
